Where to startThere’s a vast range of accommodation in Brisbane, but start off in Fortitude Valley (the Valley), which is central and very gay friendly. Brisbane’s Pride Festival, held over three weeks in June, is a great escape from the colder states in winter. Where to eat Informal al fresco dining is popular in Brisbane, particularly in the Valley and adjacent New Farm and Teneriffe, as well as West End and Paddington. Where to shop The city is littered with all the minor and major designer-labels in a fairly small area bounded by Adelaide, Elizabeth, Edward and George Streets. The Brunswick Street Mall and Ann Street in Fortitude Valley offer a mix of hip, retro and designer gear, or try Paddington for antiques and crafts. Where to party The Sportsman Hotel (‘Sporties’) in Spring Hill attracts a diverse gay crowd, and hosts groups such as the Boot Co (leather men) and BrisBears. The Wickham in the Valley attracts a more dance-oriented clientele and remains predominantly gay. The Beat is a more mixed dance venue. Family nightclub turns gay on Sunday for 'Fluffy'. Where to get away from it all Known as the Sunshine State, Queensland is Australia’s premier holiday destination. Start at flashy Surfers Paradise and head inland to Hinterland areas such as Springbrook. Noosa at the northern end of the Sunshine Coast is one of Australia’s most popular holiday destinations. Far North Queensland boasts amazing natural attractions, with the Great Barrier Reef offering an underwater wonderland. Queensland also has many resort islands. |
