Logo Where to start
Known as the city of churches, Adelaide is the capital of South Australia. Home to the prestigious gay and lesbian Feast Festival, Adelaide has the distinction of being the first state to begin dismantling discriminatory laws against homosexuality in the 1970s. It’s well worth diarising Feast – dates for 2008 are November 14 - 30 – as the city’s GLBT population is out in force, with many interstate and international visitors. Outside of Adelaide, you can explore the famous wine areas of Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Clare Valley.

Where to eat
Near Rundle Mall in Adelaide are Hindley Street and Rundle Street.  A number of restaurants, bars and clubs can be found on Hindley, but Rundle Street is a great place for food, being Adelaide’s cosmopolitan and avant-garde centre. With good food comes great wine, and there’s no shortage of either in the Adelaide Hills.  Australia’s premier cool climate wine region, the Adelaide Hills is known around the world for its quality wines.

Where to shop
Rundle Mall is where most of the major shops can be found. It’s Adelaide’s largest shopping precinct, with over 500 retail outlets situated among its 13 arcades.  You can not only shop, but also eat and watch live performances. For those shopping bargains try one of Adelaide’s markets, and if you’re into opals, the Coober Pedy mines unload their riches into the city.

Where to party
Like Mars bars? Even if you don’t, the Mars Bar in Gouger Street is the place to be in Adelaide, with an eclectic mix rarely seen in Australia’s gay scene. Other gay hang-outs in Adelaide are the Wheatsheaf, Crown and Anchor and Hampshire hotels.
