Logo Where to start
Tasmania is the most historic and wild location in Australia. If you decide not to fly direct, you can catch the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Port Melbourne, which drops you and your car off in Devonport on the central north coast. From here, you can head west to Cradle Country and the town of Burnie. Further south, trek from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, a true wilderness walk in ancient rainforests. Then head down to Hobart and the beautiful Freycinet National Park.

Where to eat

From your base in Hobart, visit Meadowbank Estates, one of Tasmania’s most awarded wineries and restaurants, with views over the Coal River Valley.  Or try Mures Upper Deck, Hobart’s premier seafood restaurant overlooking the docks. Salamanca (see below) boasts Retro Café and Machine Laundry Café, or try Mummies in Battery Point.

Where to shop
Tasmania is populated by artists with a unique take on what it means to be Australian. The rugged landscape inspires their work, and you can find examples of quality furniture, painting, photography, clothing, jewellery and artefacts.

Where to party
The restored Hobart harbour-side precinct of Salamanca is where you will find the city’s lesbian, gay and gay-friendly residents relaxing on a warm afternoon. For racier times, head to Lalaland bar and club on the first Sunday of the month upstairs at Halo, 37A Elizabeth Street Mall, or Flamingos alternative bar on Fridays and Saturdays, 251 Liverpool Street. There’s also Soak@Kaos café and lounge bar at 237 Elizabeth Street.
