24 hours in... Byron Bay PDF Print E-mail

ImageIt’s the most easterly town in Australia – in more ways than one. Byron Bay is a centre for eastern traditions, and for lovers of yoga, massage and meditation, Byron equals bliss. Swimmers and surfers love it for its beautiful beaches – as do gay men, for the warm welcome it gives queer visitors. 140 kilometres south of Brisbane and 759 kilometres north of Sydney, the gay scenes of both cities decamp to Byron for their summer holidays

ImageEAT

Small Aussie towns aren’t usually foodie havens – but Byron Bay is a standout exception. A local highlight of 30 years’ standing is the iconic Earth ’n’ Sea Amazing Pizza and Pasta – AXN can vouch that its pizza and pasta really is amazing. Vegetarians and the gluten intolerant are more than welcome too! Cnr Fletcher & Byron Sts. www.earthnsea.com.au

DRINK

The Great Northern (35 Jonson St) is a true Aussie pub and a haven for live bands. For something more sophisticated, head to La La Land (1/6 Lawson St), a northern outpost of the swish Melbourne bar. The Balcony Bar (3 Lawson St) has great cocktails (try the Cuban Sling!), while for a uniquely Byron experience, visit the Eastern-styled Buddha Bar and Restaurant (1 Skinners Shoot Rd).

ImagePLAY

Watersports... ahem...  are a playtime fave here – but at this time of year, natural attractions take a back seat to man-made fun. Byron is an ideal base for the Tropical Fruits New Year’s Festival in nearby Lismore, which boasts a NYE party, a pool party and a recovery party, as well as queer films and art. www.tropicalfruits.org.au

RELAX

Massage and meditation is a Byron speciality but for the best R&R (and it’s free!) head to one of the town’s beautiful beaches. Main Beach is central and popular, Belongil is low key and clothing optional in parts, while Clarkes is calm and perfect for swimming, as is Watego’s. For a wilder, open beach, backed by bushland, head to Tallow Beach.

ImageSTAY

Whether you’re a backpacker on a budget or a millionaire with lotsa moolah, Byron has accommodation to suit you – bed-and-breakfasts, hotels, motels, resorts and home stays abound. For something really special, try Unique Estates. A boutique property and letting agency, it offers exquisite homes to hire throughout Byron and its hinterland. www.uniqueestates.com.au
