Tuesday, 28 September 2010

It may act as a gateway to Fraser Island but Hervey Bay is more than just pit stop on the Queensland holiday trail. At this laid-back town, you'll find plenty of space and serenity thanks to 40 kilometres of stunning beaches at its border. Company, too, will never be in short supply with plenty of tales coming from local tourists and backpackers. But be sure you make time for bigger friends – Hervey Bay is Australia's whale-watching capital.

PLAY

What's a trip to Hervey Bay without a dose of water sports (and no, not that kind of water sports)? Fellow Traveller recommends Aquavue located on the beachfront at Torquay. From jet skis, kayaks and canoes to catamarans, big banana rides and fishing charters, you'll find them all here. Aquavue also offers adventure packages with other tour operators as well as on-water fitness programs. Afterwards, relax with a drink at Aquavue's very own café. www.aquavue.com.au

SEE

Each year from July to November, humpback whales set up shop at Hervey Bay before heading south. There are dozens of whale-watching operators. For a really personalised experience, Blue Dolphin Marine Tours offers whale-watching trips aboard its small sail vessel. Group numbers are kept small so there's less space-jostling and more time for whale-watching. www.bluedolphintours.com.au

VISIT

Situated across the waters from Hervey Bay is Fraser Island. This world-heritage listed island is surrounded by white sandy beaches and peppered with clear inland lakes. There are plenty of areas to explore like 75 Mile Beach and the famous coloured sand cliffs called The Cathedrals. Fraser Island is easily accessible by ferry. To get the most of the island, consider hiring a four-wheel drive. www.queenslandholidays.com.au

DO

As well as Fraser Island, Hervey Bay is also the main jumping-off point to Lady Elliot, a coral cay island. Located at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, it is known as one of the best diving locations in the country. Check out the Great Barrier Reef Day Trip which departs daily from Hervey Bay. The trips include return flights, use of snorkelling equipment, a tour aboard a glass bottom boat and a buffet lunch. www.ladyelliot.com.au

STAY

There are loads of accommodation options at Hervey Bay. For something more luxurious, look no further than Akama Resort. This architectural-designed complex is Hervey Bay's newest five-star resort. It offers one, two and three-bedroom apartments in the Esplanade with commanding views of the Marina, the Great Sandy Straits and Fraser Island. Go all out with a penthouse with its own private balcony. www.akamaresort.com.au
