Darren Chun tells us of his time in the winter wonderland of CampitelloWhere did you go and when? My partner and I went to Campitello in Northern Italy, near the Austrian border in March. Where did you stay? We stayed at a B&B called Garni Letizia, run by an Italian Mamma and her daughter who both spoke NO english! The village of Campitello is very small and only about a dozen hotels there ranging in price. What did you eat and drink? Of course in Italy you eat pizza and pasta, however, being on the border of Austria, there is a huge variety of food from both countries. The best thing we ate was called believe it or not ‘Stinko’. It's a piece of pork, slow cooked in an oven overnight in a rich gravy and vegetables. It was so big we had to share it and it tasted great especially after a long day of skiing. Washed down with some fantastic Italian red wine, it was the perfect meal. What did you do?We skied, everyday. The region has the largest ski terrain in the world with hundreds of kilometres of terrain and lifts. The snow is so dry and so deep that you just can't wait to get out there, and the sun shines all day, every day. Where did you party? I can't say that Campitello is the hottest place for nightlife. In fact, it's non-existent. There are restaurants and a few bars but there's not much happening. There is a larger town, Canzei, about a five-minute drive, which has a bit more nightlife. What was the best part of your trip? The skiing, the food, the culture, and the scenery, which is breathtaking. If you're a keen skier or boarder then you must experience it at least once – there is so much terrain that it’s possible to never do the same run twice and almost impossible to do every run. What was the worst part of your trip? The Euro! The poor Aussie dollar only buys you about 50 euro cents and the prices are the same there as they are here. So with the exchange rate you end up paying double. 7 Euros for a beer equals $14 Aussie dollars. Ouch! What advice would you give your fellow traveller? Book and pay for everything in advance – that way you only need to worry about daily expenses. Learn some Italian or German as they don't really speak a lot of English in this region, and start saving. Sum up your trip in a nutshell. An amazing experience. From a skier’s point of view it's the best snow I've ever experienced. Couple that with the most spectacular scenery, great food and quite a few HOT Italians and you can't go wrong.
