We explore one of Victoria’s best-kept secrets, the profound and beautiful Shipwreck Coast.

It seems people living on Victoria’s renowned Shipwreck Coast have a very simple philosophy – the best things in life are free.

What does this mean exactly? It means that when you visit this spectacular stretch of coastline – home of the world famous 12 Apostles – you too can experience the best of life and of nature, without even reaching for your wallet!

A trip down the Great Ocean Road reveals a host of free activities – perfect for a romantic weekend away or trip with friends – from nature walks and spectacular scenery to shopping, cafes and luxury of the seaside towns.

And best of all – with the Shipwreck Coast’s Spring Bargain Escapes you can enjoy fabulous dining and accommodation, relax beside a fire, wine glass in hand and take the time to unwind without blowing the budget.

GREAT OCEAN ROAD

Perhaps Victoria’s most famous thoroughfare – this winding stretch of road traverses the coastline and provides unrivalled views of the rugged cliff faces, spectacular rock formations and an ocean that disappears into the horizon.

Stop off along the way to explore secluded inlets, or uncrowded beaches. Got a rug? Packed a picnic? Great because the views are free! And there are plenty of them!

Some of the best include Gibson Steps – where you will be dwarfed by the enormity of the cliff line and offshore rock stacks.  What could be better than taking the steps to the beach, with the sand beneath your feet and looking up at those giant sandstone stacks – the 12 Apostles.

Also stop in at Loch Ard Gorge where you can descend the steps onto this sheltered beach and explore the caves that once offered shelter to the survivors of the famous 1878 Loch Ard shipwreck and read about the two amazing survivors Tom Pearce and Eva Carmichael.

PORT CAMPBELL

The seaside town of Port Campbell is a scenic retreat with ample accommodation, fine food and the kind of things that money just can’t buy - spectacular views, uncrowded beaches and genuine, country hospitality.

Located on the edge of the Port Campbell National Park, the town is the perfect location from which to explore the incredible natural surrounds – including the world famous 12 Apostles.

It’s hard to miss the 12 Apostles – the Shipwreck Coast’s jaw-dropping – and free – centrepiece.

Witness the splendour of these magnificent rocks that rise up majestically from the Southern Ocean. No cover charge. No pay per view. See as much as you like for as little as you please.

Take a stroll along the Port Campbell Discovery Walk which takes you from the cliff top, through dense bush to the beach, and offers unobstructed viewing of Sentinel Rock and those famous Apostles.

CRATER LAKES

Inland from the Great Ocean Road lays a spectacular countryside of craters, rich fertile plains and historic townships – with foodie delights waiting to be tasted.

The landscape has formed from ancient volcanic activity and provides some spectacular scenery – so get out and enjoy it for free!

Bring your bikes or walking shoes to explore the Camperdown - Timboon Rail Trail or explore the heritage of Camperdown where philanthropic benefactors have left a legacy of cultured streetscapes and magnificent historic buildings.

The inland townships of the Shipwreck Coast boast a bustling foodie scene – so take the time to explore this remarkable countryside and you will find fresh produce abounds – from the ocean and the field!

Take the Food, Wine and Vistas Loop from Port Campbell and stock up a picnic hamper with an array of gourmet treats.

Stop in at the Timboon Distillery to learn about whisky distilling, then pick up some delicious local cheeses from Mouse Trap Cafe L`Artisan Cheese and Apostle Whey Cheese and match them with a bottle – or two – from Newtons Ridge Winery.

As evening falls be lured by a sumptuous fireside meal and a glass of wine in a region that showcases quality local produce including cheeses, berries, wines and chocolate!

WARRNAMBOOL

Natural wonders abound in the thriving coastal town of Warrnambool with spectacular stretches of coastline and lush rural landscapes.

Here you will find cycle paths with a view, eclectic shopping and a thriving cafe culture. Take a stroll along the award-winning foreshore promenade or peruse the array of shopping on offer.

If you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of the families of Southern Right Whales out to sea, best viewed from Logans Beach – nature at its best and it’s free of charge!

To see other native wildlife in natural surrounds visit Tower Hill where, nestled inside a dormant volcano crater is a Wildlife Reserve that provides a haven for many koalas, emus and wallabies.

For a more relaxing and indulgent escape, make the most of the plentiful day spas, including Logans Beach Day Spa – where you can truly relax and truly indulge with a range of treatments.

Finish your day with a fine-dining experience like no other at one of the city’s many fabulous restaurants, renowned for an abundance of local seafood.

And since you’ve already come this far, stay overnight in a cosy B&B or seaside hotel – Warrnambool has a great array to choose from so you can spend more time exploring the natural attractions of the region – all FREE!

The Shipwreck Coast has always offered experiences that money just can’t buy. This Spring, add these free experiences to the special offers for a true Bargain Escape that’s the best value this side of the city.
